In a world where Fae live in secret in a soceity side by side with mere mortal humans, there are many clans and many sides. Certainly, one can go Undeclared -- a dangerous proposition -- but there are Free Fae, who refuse to bow to the Light or the Dark, the Seelie or the Unseelie. Vex is not one of those Fae: he swore fealty to the Dark when he was young.

The Dark Fae embrace a culture of 'me first,' every one of them apex predators who will keep their oaths (as they cannot swear an untrue oath) but also stab a friend in the back if it gets them anywhere. Combat is practically foreplay, and while they can certainly be friends with each other, they're still jockeying for power and position, because among the Dark Fae, if you can take it--you can have it. If you can hold it, it's yours. If you can't? Someone who can will be right along to take it from you.

A Mesmer-- a puppet master who can make you dance all night or stab your friend to death-- Vex is a rare Fae, being the last of his mind (which is mostly his own fault, saving his own hide at a young age and allowing the slow death of his family at the hands of the Una Mens, a Fae authority, for their 'treason.') He is well aware of his uniqueness, and that he makes a very dangerous foe because few Fae even remember Mesmers, they've been gone so long.

Vex is used by the Dark to deal with any Dark Fae who breaks the clan's rules. His power has been used to convince a human police force that his victims either committed suicide or murdered each other, or to have them execute a Fae considered criminal. He enjoys his work to a point, though he's not a sociopathic murderer. He just sees tthis as his duty - betrayal to the Dark or Clan is not accepted in Fae society, and they use him to clean up problem people who decide, say, human lovers are more important than Clan loyalty, Dark Fae who sell secrets to the Light, and so on. He's a hitman -- a flashy, S&M loving hitman, but still a hitman.

Though he doesn't think much of humans, he blends well into human society and owns Carpe Noctem, a Gothic and BDSM nightclub, that doubles as a meeting and feeding ground for the Dark Fae. However, to do this is has to be a human club to avoid suspicion. He owns several clubs and to obtain a liquor license he must uphold a "human reputation" and keep the human city council happy, so Vex plays his roll as the flamboyantly queer Gothic BDSM club-scene kid that he is.

Vex enjoys power plays, BDSM (especially subbing for humans, which is a filthy kink in the Fae world,) trolling the unaware, and slowly growing emotionally as a person. He's not evil -- not in the sense that Fae would recognize, though certainly some humans would think so. He's just what all Fae are in his world, Light or Dark -- a man managing his chattel, earning a living, and enjoying his life. It's just the chattel happen to think, talk, and hold down jobs and support families.

He has plenty of secrets -- the knowledge of the Morrigan's secret human son Massimo just to name one -- and he trafficks in those when he needs to. Otherwise, he's happy to be what most Dark Fae are. Powerful, enjoying it, seizing opportunity when he needs it.

Again: he's not a sociopath -- he is a monster, yes, but in the traditional sense. He can learn, he can be taught, he can love, he can change, and will do so over the course of his canon.
